SENG 3890: Jane Austen
This course introduces students to Jane Austen’s novels through the history and culture of the Regency period. In addition to reading four of Austen’s novels along with some of her shorter works and letters, we will look at the Regency era culture, paying special attention to dress, etiquette, architecture, dancing, food, travel, and the legal system. We will watch five adaptations of Austen’s novels, both historical adaptations and modernized retellings, to think how Austen’s work has been translated to film and the filming, design, and acting choices made within them.
