SENG 3860: Magical Realism
This course introduces students to the critical study of magical realism in contemporary literature (and two films). We will explore how contemporary writers define magical realism and use this multi-faceted genre to explore themes of race, gender, class, and other vectors of identity. We will also explore how writers use the genre to confront and address personal, political, social, historical, and cultural anxieties. We will read works from a variety of authors with different identities and backgrounds in order that we might examine magical realism as a genre of global literature.
