Georgia Tech, Literature/Media/Communication 3316: “Science, Technology, and Postcolonial Literature”

This course will examine British colonialism of the nineteenth century and contemporary postcolonial responses from a variety of sources including poetry, novels, short stories, critical essays, visual images, and theoretical texts. Through our readings and discussions, we will look closely at the roles science and technology serve in the expansion of the empire, and we will examine the contemporary issues of postcolonialism and neocolonialism including globalization and global capitalism. Writers may include Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad, Jamaica Kincaid, Chinua Achebe, Jhumpa Lahiri, Salman Rushdie, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Aravind Adiga among others. This course will not assume that you have previous exposure to postcolonial literature and theory, and the only prerequisite (in addition to ENGL 1102) you will need is a willingness to explore interdisciplinary ideas and complex viewpoints which may differ from your own.
