"iAusten: The Digital Jane Austen" (a future course....)
This course is about exploring not only Austen's novel but also the digital lives the novels have generated. We will consider how films and, more recently, video games have made Austen into iAusten, a kind of personal Jane Austen that we can customize for ourselves (as seen in the game Jane Austen Unbound, where players can design their own Austen or Austen heroine, an interesting conflation that needs more exploration).
Much debated portraits of Jane Austen
We would read the following: excerpts from Austen's Juvenilia, Northanger Abbey (1818), Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), and Persuasion (1818).
I can also envision this course as an adaptation course of sorts that explores the recent adaptations of Austen's novels in films such as Clueless (1995) and Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), as well as the representation of Austen and her fans in films such as Becoming Jane (2007), Lost in Austen (2008), and Austenland (2013).
