University of Georgia, English 1101/1102: Learning Community: Life Sciences – Nutrition: “Food as Text”

Terms: Fall 2008, Fall 2011

The Learning Community experience allows small groups of first-year students to live and attend classes together.  To address the unique theme of this community and accommodate students seeking credit for English 1101 and 1102, the course explores the complex relationship humans have with food.  Students explore this relationship through class discussions, papers, and presentations in the mediums of print, film, and media.  In this course, I particularly enjoyed pairing scenes of feasts and food from children's fiction, such as "Hansel & Gretel," Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Dickens's A Christmas Carolwith a discussion of the current political and social issues regarding children and food.
